Upper Dolpa area was open to foreigners only from 1989. Upper Dolpa is located on the section between Tibet and Dhaulagiri range. This is one of the restricted area in Nepal where tourist flow is controlled by the government to minimize the environmental and cultural influences. The trek starts after flying to Jhuphal and follow wildest trekking trail in western region in Nepal. We will get opportunity to spend our time at Shey Phokundo lake and witness unique Bon culture followed by the local inhabitants.
Phoksundo Lake is freshwater Alpine lake located inside Shey Phuksundo National Park in Dolpa region of Nepal. This lake is located at altitude of 3,611.5 m (11,849 ft) above sea level. This lake is also listed in Ramsar site.
Phuksundo area holds significant religious importance to Bon religion followers. There are more than 20 Buddhist Chortens in the south area of the lake. The Eastern bank consist Buddhist ghompa where annual prayer and celebration is organized by local monks.
